Critic source criteria
Thank you for your interest in being listed in our critic directory. Applications are reviewed against the guidelines below; we may update these criteria from time to time.
Who are listed critic sources?
The directory focuses on publications and channels that regularly publish cigar reviews, typically with a consistent byline or editorial voice, whether that is a magazine site, blog, video channel, or podcast. Individual reviewers are attributed through the publication; we do not maintain a separate “critic roster” in this version of the product.
How does a publication become listed?
Outlets are vetted for fit with our values and eligibility guidelines. Submitting an application does not guarantee inclusion. We may approve, defer, or decline on a case-by-case basis.
Key values
- Insight. Reviews should go beyond flavor clichés where possible: structure, construction, context, and how the cigar compares within its line or price band.
- Audience. We want a mix of voices that speak to everyday smokers, collectors, and curious newcomers, not only a single demographic or house style.
- Quality. Clear writing or production, consistent methodology where scores are used, and honest disclosure when a sample or relationship could affect perception.
- Dedication. Regular review output (cadence varies by format) and a track record we can evaluate, not a one-off project page.
Eligibility guidelines
These are directional, not a rigid checklist. We may include outlets that broaden the conversation even when they do not hit every numeric benchmark.
Written / online
- Consistent cigar review coverage over a meaningful period (often two years or more).
- Editorial independence: reviews are not pay-for-play; sponsored content is clearly labeled.
- Where scores exist, they should be visible on the review page (or clearly explained if a different system is used).
Video / podcast
- Stable show identity, readable audio, and enough published episodes to judge consistency.
- If numeric scores are claimed, they should be stated clearly in the episode or its companion notes, not only in casual asides.
Integrity
We expect applicants and listed outlets to respect readers: no plagiarism, no harassment or discrimination, and no undisclosed conflicts of interest. We do not accept reviews whose outcome was influenced by undisclosed payment, quid pro quo, or other hidden incentives.
Ongoing review
Listed outlets may be re-evaluated. We may suspend or remove a listing if criteria are no longer met or if conduct breaches our standards. We reserve the right to approve, reject, or remove listings at any time.
